A Brief History of St. Petersburg, FL
General John Williams had a vision for the 2,500 acres he purchased on Tampa Bay in the year 1875. In his mind's eye, Williams envisioned a great city on the water with parks and wide streets. His vision came to reality with the help of Peter Demens, a Russian aristocrat who brought the Orange Belt Railway to the area in 1888. In June of 1903, the city was incorporated as St. Petersburg - named after Demens' birthplace.
The grand city that both Williams and Demens had envisioned by the bay with the vast parklands and busy streets came to fruition and is one of the most popular places to visit in North America to this day. With its vibrant cityscape and a bustling downtown filled with world-famous museums and art galleries such as the Salvador Dali Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, and The Chihuly Collection, to name a few, top-rated restaurants, fabulous shopping experiences and beautiful beaches, it is no wonder why people are flocking to St. Petersburg.
