In 1994, the citizens of the “City of St. Petersburg Beach” voted to shorten the name to the “City of St. Pete Beach” to avoid confusion with the City of St. Petersburg since St. Pete Beach is a community of eight barrier islands situated off the mainland of Saint Petersburg in Pinellas County. However, many people and businesses still use the more familiar longer spelling of “St. Petersburg Beach.”
